Donald K. Bolton, 76, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2014, at St. Luke’s Inpatient Hospice Unit, Cedar Rapids, after battling various types of cancer for 26 years. A funeral service celebrating Don’s exceptional life will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 21, 2014, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Central City, with Pastor Michael Morgan officiating. Visitation: Thursday November 20, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Central City. Burial: Mt. Clark Cemetery, Central City, Iowa.

Don is survived by his daughters, Dawn (Ruben) Ruiz, Fountain Valley, CA, Diane (Dan) Ehlers, Allen, TX, and Debra Bolton, Fountain Valley, CA; grandsons, Jake Castroreale, Fountain Valley, CA, Nicholas and Christopher Ehlers, Allen, TX; sister Jean (Bernard) Buschkoetter, Lakewood, CO; and significant other/companion, Sandy Kolda Ochs.

Don was preceded in death by his parents Earl & Carrie Bolton, brothers, Leonard, Archie, Lester, and Junior Bolton; and sisters, Fay Fleming, Carol Covington Davis, Bessie Bowers, and Lillian Waters Onstott.

Don was born November 13, 1938, in Iowa City, Iowa. He was the youngest of 10 children, and the only one born in a hospital. Don went to Central City High School where he played baseball on the Central City Wildcats team. He pitched a (7-0) shutout game to win the 1956 Fall State Baseball Championship.

Don went on to attend the University of Texas-Pan American College with a baseball scholarship. After suffering an injury he completed his degree from Upper Iowa University. He continued his education and completed his Masters Degree in Education from Highlands University, Las Vegas, New Mexico. Don taught at Alburnett Schools and coached baseball. Don continued his career in California working as an Elementary School Principal for 32 years in the ABC Unified School District, Los Angeles County. Don also had various other jobs. He was a Real Estate Broker, Insurance Broker, Financial Planner, and owned and operated his own tax services business.

Don loved to garden and took pride in designing and landscaping his flower gardens. He also loved to travel. Some of his favorite trips were to exotic locations where he enjoyed sightseeing and tasting the local cuisine.

Memorial contributions in Don’s name may be made through St. Luke’s Hospital, to the Inpatient Hospice Unit, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402 or the American Cancer Society.
