Bradley “Brad” Alan Van Dee, 43, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Friday, September 23, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, surrounded by his mother and son. God took him away to be with his father and older brother, Daniel Alan. Cremation has been accorded. A memorial gathering celebrating Brad’s life will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, September 26, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Graveside Service: 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 27, at Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion with Revs. Greg Williamson and David Renfro officiating.
Brad was born at St. Luke’s Hospital on October 14, 1972, son of Wanda (Collett) and Edward Van Dee. He was baptized on October 29, 1972, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on May 17, 1987, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Marion. Brad enjoyed Cub and Boy Scouts, earning the Order of the Arrow and His Eagle Scout Award in 1990. He graduated from Marion Independent Schools on May 26, 1991. Brad attended Kirkwood Community College and received his AAS in Automotive Technology in May of 1993.
Brad worked at Huckleberry’s throughout high school. After graduating from Kirkwood, he started working at Champion Auto in 1993. Later, he went to work for Western Auto and continued to work there with the multiple company name changes until the last name change to Advance Auto. In 1999, Brad went to work for Toyota Financial Services as a Claims Specialist and was employed there until his death.
Brad enjoyed listening to several different bands but his favorites were KISS and Megadeth and he also attended several concerts. He liked watching movies, especially as Jaden would say “scary movies”. Brad was an avid reader and one of his favorite authors was Stephen King, which just this past summer he was able to visit the Stanley Hotel for the second time. He was a die-hard Kansas City Chief’s fan- GO CHIEFS! His main pride and joy was his son, Jaden.
Survivors include his mother, Wanda Van Dee of Marion; son, Jaden Daniel Van Dee of Marion; maternal grandmother, Sarah Lemira Collett of Wellman, Iowa; many friends especially, Dan O’Neill of Cedar Rapids; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Van Dee on May 13, 2015; older brother, Daniel Alan on December 13, 1967; and grandparents, Raymond Collett, AJ and Margaret Van Dee.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for Jaden’s college.
