Anthony “Tony” Peter Palumbo, 96, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Manchester, Iowa, died Thursday, August 21, 2014, at Evergreen Estates. Services: 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 26, 2014, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Deacon Phil Saunders. Eulogist: Mark Underwood. Family will greet friends from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, August 25, 2014, at the funeral home. Burial: Fairview Cemetery, Earlville, with military rites.
Survivors include his son, William J. (Tamara) Palumbo of Cedar Rapids; and a grandson, Nicholas (Shannon) Napier.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maxine Palumbo in 1990; and siblings, Angelo, Daniel, Thomas, Rose, Marie and Tessie.
Tony was born March 30, 1918, in Cold Springs, New York, son of Joseph and Angelina (DiPaola) Palumbo. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles. Tony worked for the Air Force Space Command (NASA) in 1961 and as an income tax examiner for the Internal Revenue Service in Los Angeles. On February 14, 1956, Tony was united in married to Maxine Virginia Schnittjer in Manchester, Iowa. He served in the United States Army in California, Hawaii, the Philippines, Okinawa and Korea.
Tony was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Manchester, the Academy of Science and a life member of UCLA University. His hobbies included collecting baseball cards. He was a loving father and loved spending time with his son.
